Palmy Projection Lab, Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Saturday, August 14, 7pm.
REVIEW: Every white stone column, arch and alcove, melts then reforms beneath a vibrant canopy of colourful abstraction.
When a group of multimedia artists are given the interior of a cathedral to use as a canvas the result is an extraordinary immersive experience of colour and music.
And so it was last Saturday evening inside the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on Broadway.
Spokesperson for Palmy Projection Lab James Lissette said the performance was a gift of sound and vision to the congregation of the cathedral.
In his short introduction he invites those gathered to look around during the performance and even to lie on the floor to enhance the experience. Three people take up the offer.
The one-hour presentation of slowly evolving images is enhanced with live music. Hints of hymns and gospel tunes emerge from the improvisation of Matt Soong’s meditative recital on the cathedral’s grand piano.
Red falls from the ceiling draping the whole interior. It’s an enlarged image of one of David Lupton’s beautiful photographs, an out-take from his collection The Divine Remains.
